Chapter 31

HOME JAMIE, AND DON’T SPARE THE HORSES

IN MATT’S case, traveling back to Australia was all quite straightforward, but I did feel like a criminal on parole; my passport was flagged on arrival. Jamie Weiss was at Immigration to meet us.

“It’s okay, Ben, you’re now officially home,” he said as my passport was stamped and the system notified I wasn’t still at large in Asia.

Ross had certainly done his bit, and Matt was expected, his presence welcomed as we were both hugged by a quite emotional Jamie.

“I had faith in you, Ben, but you’ve exceeded everyone’s expectations. I really must congratulate you—by your example you’ve made it easier for others to follow.”

“I was lucky. I’ve got a good mate who kept me in line,” I said, pointing at Matt.

“Oh, get over yourself, princess,” Matt said. “You told me you were too shit-scared to fuck up in case this lovely man kicked your big arse.”

“I haven’t got a big arse.”

“You have. It’s a perfect target.”

“Christ, who let you off the chain?”

“You did.”

Jamie laughed at us, his eyes twinkling. I think he wondered what had happened to me. I was like a zombie going to Jomtien; coming home again I must have sounded like I’d had a personality transplant. I knew I didn’t sound like the old me, but no one seemed to notice or to care.
